The New York Times Style Magazine is prepping a story a called “Hip-Hop and R&B’s New Voices” where seven rising female artists (Tinashe, SZA, Dej Loaf, Empress Of, ABRA, Lord Narf and Jean Deaux) all modeled unique earrings. During the photo shoot, the ladies sang the Roberta Flack/Fugees classic “Killing Me Softly” shown in the behind-the-scenes clip below.

Lord Narf starts the clip with an original flow and Tinashe comes next, singing a line of the lyrics a capella. SZA also sings a piece of the classic R&B tune before Empress Of, Deaux, and ABRA all add their unique style to the song.

Along with this, both Tinashe and Dej Loaf are a few of M.A.C Cosmetics’ newest endorsers.

The same day she premiered her “All Hands On Deck” music video, Tinashe delivered an equally dance-heavy performance of the song—the original cut, not the remix featuring Iggy Azalea that dropped earlier this spring—on Conan Monday night. Actually working the crowd, the R&B singer was body-rolling and popping and locking and dropping, and by the end even Conan couldn’t help but purr in her general direction. (That’s not a joke. Conan literally purrs in her face.)

There were a shitload of great singles that dropped in 2014, but we’ve got to give the gold medal to Tinashe for her breakthrough joint ‘2 On‘. It’s silky, sultry R&B that has a segment inspired by Sean Paul – need we say more?
Tinashe continued her hot streak with the impressive depth she showed on debut album Aquarius, revealing her soulful reinterpretation of classic R&B and a handful of bangers to boot. This is the sort of music that makes you want a clique of back-up dancers wearing full Adidas tracksuits. To put it more eloquently, Tinashe’s record is pure flames.

We spent a day with Tinashe in Sydney on her recent Australian tour. Here’s how it went down:

We kick off our day at Sony Headquarters in Darlinghurst, a lovely space filled with Jessica Mauboy posters and giant television screens. With so much on-point interior decoration, I would sleep here if I could. We meet Tinashe for an interview and I immediately put my serious journalism face on, proceeding to ask her all the hard-hitting questions like “Do you think Sean Paul’s cornrows influenced how good his music output was?”

It’s once in a blue moon that you find an artist like Tinashe. As the chanting rhythm of her name echoed throughout the Metro Theatre, the place was suddenly packed to capacity and everyone was ready for the R&B based performer to step out onto the stage. Lights dimmed, and the moment had come. Deafening screams exploded as the 22-year-old artist strutted onto the stage in a slow, catwalk manner. Tinashe was here, and she was fire from the word go.

The track Vulnerable kicked off the night, but there was nothing vulnerable about Tinashe’s stage presence. With her neat ponytail, baggy shorts and a red bomber jacket, Tinashe portrayed a sexy, tomboy-ish vibe as she gave everyone cheeky stares and flaunted those killer dance moves. You were instantly drawn in to her seductive yet goofy and fun ways.
