Sunday night (Feb. 1), Drai’s Nightclub at The Cromwell hosted its weekly SunDrai’s event by throwing J. Cole a massive birthday celebration featuring performances from both J. Cole and Tinashe. The party included surprise appearances from some of hip-hop’s biggest names including Busta Rhymes, Coolio, and Jermaine Dupri, not to mention a cameo from legendary bodybuilder Jay Cutler, DJ Eric Dlux and more.

The evening’s highlights were undoubtedly the performances from J. Cole and Tinashe.  The two stars cranked the energy up in the club so high that Drai’s Nightclub felt like it was floating well above the already impressive 11-story view it occupies on the rooftop of The Cromwell overlooking the famed Las Vegas Strip.

Armed with lasers, smoke and a couple of electric fans blowing wind through her hair, Tinashe layered on the pop-diva show business in her performance Thursday night, a hometown stop on the L.A.-based soul singer’s tour.

The out-front display at El Rey Theatre – not to mention the volume and heft of the music – represented a surprising shift from her excellent debut “Aquarius,” last year’s ooziest, most internally oriented R&B album. It’s a sensual, slow-moving set with echoes of Aaliyah and Janet Jackson but little in common with today’s up-tempo club jams.

Like a zephyr of air, the element that Aquarius cosmically represents, Tinashe cannot be contained. Last January, the 21 year old singer-songwriter dropped “2 On,” a rhythmic club thumper featuring a rap interlude by Schoolboy Q. The track quickly became one of the year’s most infectious radio hits.

“It’s been an incredible journey ever since it’s come out,” the artist explains. “I’ve always hoped it would be successful, but never really had expectations. It has gone above and beyond. It’s been a wild ride!”

In October of this year, after three mixtapes, Tinashe Kachingwe released her debut album Aquarius via RCA. With radio-friendly R&B-influenced singles like “2 On” featuring Schoolboy Q and “Pretend” with A$AP Rocky, it was an instant hit. When we spoke with the singer over the phone last month, she was on her way to London and then Abu Dhabi before embarking on a mini U.S. tour. Next month, she’ll be back in Europe.

The Los Angeles-native, however, did not become famous over night. The daughter of a physical therapist from Iowa and an actor born in Zimbabwe, Tinashe began her career when most children start kindergarten. She’s worked professionally her whole life—first as a model and actress and, since the age of 16, as a singer. Singled out as the acting kid, Tinashe didn’t particularly enjoy school. “I was kind of isolated from my peers; I didn’t really get along with them too well. Kids didn’t really understand that I was working as a professional at that age,” she explains. “Once I stopped focusing on people my age that were in school and I started hanging out with people in the industry, like producers, engineers, songwriters, that’s when I was really like, ‘Okay, there’s a life after college and all this other stuff everyone’s focused on.'”
