Singer-songwriter Tinashe has made a name for herself lately and buzz surrounding her name is as fierce as a buzz symphony from a beehive. With three mixtapes under her belt and a fresh debut top 20 album on the Billboard 200 chart inked on her résumé, the California native seems to be crafting a career made for success.

The young starlet has developed her strong fan base built on consistency and pure work ethic. In just a span of three years, the 21-year-old released four consecutive solid projects–2011 mixtape In Case We Die, 2012 mixtape Reverie, 2013 mixtape Black Water and her 2014 debut studio album Aquarius. The latter spawned two lead singles “2 On” and “Pretend” featuring rapper A$AP Rocky, serving as a launch pad for her career.

Last March Sidewalk Hustle had the opportunity to chat with up-and-comer Tinashe. A few weeks ago they headed to her Toronto tour date and caught up with the young artist once again to talk inspiration, her creative process, life and more.

Her energetic live show was much more up beat than they were expecting. The LA-native had a fully choreographed set complete with back-up dancers. She belted out favourites like “2 On,” “Pretend” and even a few select tracks off her Black Water mixtape.

Not only do her passion and dedication shine through, but you can tell the girl is definitely an entertainer.

Likened to a “Baby Beyonce”, Tinashe has all the makings of a future luminary.

“It’s just about people getting to know who I am as an artist, as a young woman working in the music industry,” offers 21-year-old Tinashe Kachingwe when I ask her about the themes on her new album, Aquarius. Like butter wouldn’t melt. But I’ve listened to her major label debut. It extols the virtues of everything from multiple orgasms to getting so high you start seeing things. And that’s the joy of Tinashe. She teams feathery lightness with hefty hints at the shadowy subtexts of a young female mind. The video for her ratchet club-smash single, “2 On”, opens with her posing for selfies and practising dance routines with her girls, and eventually descends into the dark corners of an “anything could happen” sweaty warehouse club.

In October of this year, after three mixtapes, Tinashe Kachingwe released her debut album Aquarius via RCA. With radio-friendly R&B-influenced singles like “2 On” featuring Schoolboy Q and “Pretend” with A$AP Rocky, it was an instant hit. When we spoke with the singer over the phone last month, she was on her way to London and then Abu Dhabi before embarking on a mini U.S. tour. Next month, she’ll be back in Europe.

The Los Angeles-native, however, did not become famous over night. The daughter of a physical therapist from Iowa and an actor born in Zimbabwe, Tinashe began her career when most children start kindergarten. She’s worked professionally her whole life—first as a model and actress and, since the age of 16, as a singer. Singled out as the acting kid, Tinashe didn’t particularly enjoy school. “I was kind of isolated from my peers; I didn’t really get along with them too well. Kids didn’t really understand that I was working as a professional at that age,” she explains. “Once I stopped focusing on people my age that were in school and I started hanging out with people in the industry, like producers, engineers, songwriters, that’s when I was really like, ‘Okay, there’s a life after college and all this other stuff everyone’s focused on.'”

The “2 On” starlet speaks on her keys to success and why she’s far from satisfied.

Tinashe understands the significance of family values, strength, and leadership, which she highlights in this Army spotlight. A R&B army of one, Tinashe ambushed the music world with her certified smash, the DJ Mustard-produced “2 On.” In this intimate sit down with Tinashe, the 21-year-old stunner speaks on the journey to releasing her impressive debut LP ‘Aquarius,’ and how this is just the beginning. “I believe I can be the leader of female R&B,” she says confidently. “I have a lot of work left to do.”

The Washington Post: “Tinashe is a new R&B star who recaptures the magic of the genre’s recent past”

At some point this year, you probably heard Tinashe’s “2 On” — an enviably lean DJ Mustard-produced track carried by a sparse bass line and the former child actor and model’s delicate murmurings about indulging in the drink and the smoke. If you’ve heard the hit, or any of the tracks from Tinashe’s debut, “Aquarius,” you’ve also likely heard the influence of singers such as Janet Jackson, Aaliyah and even Diddy protege Cassie (remember her?).

New artists don’t love being compared to established ones, no matter how flattering those comparisons may be. But for Tinashe, a huge part of her appeal lies in her ability to recapture the magic of R&B past. At the Howard Theatre on Wednesday night, the 21-year-old Los Angeles native took the best elements of R&B/pop from the late-’90s and early-’00s — light pop vocals, dance beats, exposed midriff — and coated it all in an otherworldly, sci-fi aesthetic.

She emerged wearing a sparkly face mask with cat ears and mewled her way through “Vulnerable,” from her mixtape “Black Water,” singing “don’t stop looking at me” over and over, as if casting a spell on the small, but enthralled, audience.
